GEF-CSO Network (formerly known as GEF-NGO Network) is an independent network of civil society organisations which acts as a bridge between civil society and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) - the largest global financing mechanism for the environment.

News from Central Focal Point    
     

GEF-CSO Consultation Meeting, 1June 2015, Washington DC.

More than 100 representatives from civil society, GEF Council members GEF Agencies and the GEF Secretariat attended the consultation meeting on the 1 June 2015 in Washington DC, held prior to the 48th GEF Council Meeting. The meeting included a one hour dialogue between civil society and the GEF CEO and two panel sessions to discuss the strengthening of CSO engagement in the GEF and knowledge management in the GEFClick here to view the report.

 

48th GEF Council Meeting, 2-4 June 2015, Washington DC

The 48th GEF Council Meeting was held in Washington DC from 2-4 June 2015. This meeting was important as a number of key decisions were made including   approving five global programs and a range of country projects with GEF allocation of $709 Million and cofounding of $4.81 billion. Click here for the report on the Network activities during the meeting.

 

New Strategic Plan and New Governance Structure for the Network 

The Network Coordination Committee adopted a new Strategic Plan on 2 June 2015. This Strategic Plan lays out the vision and targets for the GEF CSO network in the GEF 6 and GEF 7 periods (between 2015 - 2022). Read more. Election for RFP for South Asia

The Network initiated election for Regional Focal Point (RFP) for South Asia region in June 2015 . The election was carried out smoothly. The Network welcomes the new elected RFP, Society of Environment & Development (SED) of India represented by Dr. Lalit Mohan whose tenure will commence on 15 Sept 2015. The Network would like to thank the outgoing RFP, Society for Conservation and Protection of Environment (SCOPE), Pakistan for its contributions to the Network.


Review of the GEF CSO Network

The GEF (IEO), upon the request of the GEF Council, has launched an evaluation of the GEF CSO Network. The evaluation will review the Network’s performance, relevance, effectiveness and results in promoting knowledge dissemination and CSO involvement in GEF policies and programs. The evaluation which started in June 2015 will involve data gathering which include through survey, interviews and meetings and the findings will be presented to the GEF Council Meeting in June 2016.  You can view the Approach Paper of this evaluation. Network members and other stakeholders' cooperation in giving input to the survey is much appreciated. 


Update on Network Membership

The Network welcomed 10 new member organisations to the Network in August 2015. Click here for the list of the new members. As of today, the Network consists of 474 members. 

     
 News from Network Regions  

South America  - Regional CSO Meeting in Paraguay, 15 Apr 2015

A regional civil society organization (CSO) meeting was held on 15 Apr 2015 in Asuncion, Paraquay at the time of the GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for South America region. Caribbean  -  Regional CSO Meeting in Bahamas, 5 May 2015 

A regional CSO meeting was held in Freeport, Bahamas on 5  May 2015 prior to the GEF ECW  for Caribbean region which took place from 6 – 7 May 2015. The meeting was attended by sixteen (16) CSO representatives from nine countries in the Caribbean region. Click here to view the summary report

   

Eastern Europe & Central Asia - Regional CSO meeting in Georgia, 22 June 2015

A regional CSO meeting was held in Tbilisi, Georgia on 23 June 2015 prior to the GEF ECW for Eastern Europe region which took place from 22 – 23 June 2015. The meeting was attended by twenty two (22) CSO representatives from seven countries in the region. Click here to view the summary report.

   
News from Indigenous Peoples

Thailand Commemorates International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

In commemoration of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples last August 9, the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) observed the day in collaboration with the Network of Indigenous Peoples of Thailand (NIPT) at the Chulalongkorn University campus, Bangkok, Thailand. This year, the event marked nine years of the signing of United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Read more >>

Guardians of the Forests

The GEF stressed the importance of addressing forest issues in a holistic and integrated manner, and reaffirmed its commitment to making forests an essential part of sustainable development at the 11th session of the UN Forum on Forests. Read More>>

 

AfDB with GEF support continues to strengthen resilience to climate change in Africa 

The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) approved USD 35 million in funding to improve climate resilience to be channeled through the African Development Bank for programs in Côte d’Ivoire, Chad, Zambia. Read More>>

ECW Pacific

Eligible Countries : Cook Islands, Fiji, Indonesia, Kribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

GEF 49th Council Meeting

The GEF 49th Council Meeting will be held in Washington DC, USA from Oct 20-22, 2015. A CSO-Council consultation meeting will be held on Oct 19. Registration for self-funded CSO to attend the meeting is still open until Oct 9. Click here to register.

About the GEF-CSO Network

The GEF-CSO Network comprises nearly 500 member organisations with experience and expertise in GEF's areas of work from all regions around the world. It is governed by a global Coordination Committee composed of representatives of elected Regional Focal Point (RFP) organisations from 16 geographic regions and three Indigenous Peoples Focal Points (IPFP) from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The day-to-day work of the Network at global level is coordinated by a Central Focal Point (CFP) elected from among the Coordination Committee members while work at regional level is facilitated by RFPs and IPFPs.
