Election of Regional Focal Point for South Africa
The GEF Accredited NGO’s
South Africa Region
3 October 2009
Re: Extending Deadline for submitting nominations for RFP Election, Southern Africa
Dear Colleagues,
You all are aware that the GEF NGO Network has initiated the elections for the position of Regional Focal Point (RFP) in your region. A communication was sent out to you on 12th September 2009 announcing the schedule for the ongoing election process. The deadline for submitting the nominations was kept as 30th September 2009 as per the notice.
However, as no nominations for the post have been received, the Elections Task Force in mutual consultation with the Governance Sub Committee has decided to extend the deadline for submitting nominations for the post of Regional Focal Point- South Africa by one week. This is a very important time for the Network as we are pushing for an increased level of funding for GEF and better access for civil society organisations. We very much hope that the Southern Africa Region can be properly represented in the Network at this time.
Those interested organizations meeting the agreed requirements can submit the stipulated documents before 10th October.
It is requested to please submit your nomination along with the supporting documents to the dedicated email set up for the purpose with copies marked to the emails of all members of the Task Force listed below.
The dedicated emails for your region is
Election-SouthAfrica@gefngo.org
Members of the Election Task Force:
The elections are also being rescheduled and will take place between 11th-31st October 2009 and will be done via e-mail and/or fax. Notwithstanding any unavoidable delay, the Elections Task Force would announce the results of the election by 2nd November 2009.
We look forward to your enthusiastic participation in the election process.
With regards,
Jagdeesh Puppala,

GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT FACILITY (GEF) NGO NETWORK
CALL FOR ELECTIONS OF REGIONAL FOCAL POINT (RFP) FOR
SOUTH AFRICA
12th September 2009
Dear Colleagues,
As the representative of the GEF NGO Network and in the capacity of the Chair, Governance, Membership and Elections Sub Committee, I am writing to you to invite all accredited members of the GEF NGO Network in South Africa to participate in elections for the Regional Focal Point (RFP). The list of countries participating in GEF which are currently included in the region is as follows: South Africa: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
NGOs play a major role in the Global Environment Facility (GEF), both at the policy and project levels. Inputs from NGOs are facilitated through the GEF NGO Network, which was established in 1996. Within the Network, Regional Focal Points play an important role in coordinating activities at regional level and facilitating input from the Regions into the policy making of GEF.
The RFP for the South Africa region has recently completed its terms of office. Based on the Guidelines of the GEF-NGO Network and the decision taken by the Coordination Committee during its June 2008 meeting, elections for the region should be held before the next Council meeting in November 2009. An “Elections Task Force” set up under the Governance, Membership and the Elections Sub-Committee would oversee the Elections.
The members of the Elections Task Force are Jagdeesh Puppala, RFP South Asia and Chairperson of the Task Force; Felipe Villagran, RFP Meso America; Rex Horoi,, RFP Pacific; and Johnson Cerda, Representative of Indigenous Peoples – Americas. The contact details are given in Annex 1.
In the first stage of the election from 12th to 30th of September 2009 we are seeking self- nominations from organizations willing to stand for a four-year term as regional focal point in the respective regions.
